Scrap Metal Sorting with Portable XRF
One mis-sorted heat costs thousands — how yards use Ni, Zn, and Cu-Zn fingerprints to sort faster.
Specelex Team · 2025-06-12
Mixed scrap arrives every day. Visual sorting alone leaves money on the table.
Quick-sort fingerprints
- Stainless: Ni reading splits austenitic (304/316) from ferritic (430)
- Aluminum: High Zn flags 7075; Mg+Si pattern for 6061
- Brass: Cu-Zn ratio; Pb distinguishes C360 from H62
Yard workflow
1. Magnetic pre-sort
2. XRF spot test on suspect pieces
3. Label and segregate by grade family
4. Photo + grade log for buyers
